GRAPHIC DESIGN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

?The Digital Window? An Exhibition of Graphic Design Education.

An opportunity for graphic design programs to exhibit the product of their work, their students.

Documentation of exhibit will be provided.

This exhibit is open to all faculty in graphic design that wish to showcase the work of their students in the galleries at the University of Texas-Pan American. Exhibits will feature students currently enrolled in bachelor or graduate degree programs. Special preference will be given to work submitted from international design programs. Interested faculty should submit student work as it pertains to their own pedagogical vision. Submitted work may be of a single project, a single course or multiple courses taught by the participating faculty or collaborations between graphic design programs. Project and course descriptions should accompany the student work.

Work that features the latest educational trends in design education are also encouraged to participate. Our goal is to showcase work from the best design programs and a diverse collection of philosophies represented by the professors who make design education an ever changing and culturally significant endeavor.

There is no fee required to exhibit.

Submit all work electronically.

Two galleries on the UTPA campus will dedicate space for each faculty/course submission.

In this project we will focus on the typographic abstraction and representation of a ‘living space.‘ The aim is to examine, analyse and represent the qualities of a specific social space through a typographic composition. By experimenting with new forms and relations in typography, you are expected to transform an experienced and shared space in to
visual form.
In this context, abstraction is an important keyword. Our project does not involve ‘drawing by letters‘; but arranging typographic forms in accord with design principles so that the finished composition will create the ’feeling‘ of the selected social space. The project requires you to transform a social space in to typographic abstraction. The function of the area, people‘s behaviour, its sound, directions, movement, history, architectural structure, color, simply all features that create the atmosphere of your selected social space, can be used as key words for departure.
In this project, you have to come up with your own materials. Instead using dummy text, please refer to your subject. You can use your notes, previously written material, comments, dialogues, signs as your material.

Include Course Description:COURSE DESCRIPTION:
GRA 302 is a studio course that deals with complex design subjects from within a creative perspective. This course promotes a design process that necessitates ’Problem definition’ , ‘research‘, concept development‘, ‘effective visualization‘ and ’presentation of ideas‘. It tries to provide a space for students to develop their skills in design thinking and form giving; and encourages them to make their personal voice audible.

In order to pursuit the objectives of this course, it is necessary for students to perform the following issues:

* to be able to make research and in depth analysis of the subject matter.
* to develop their ability to analyse design problems and find inspiring ‘entry points’
in them.
* to understand the relationship between form and meaning.
* to explore visual forms that offers clarity, understanding and appeal to the intended audience.
* to improve their skills and confidence in typography and to challenge the ways they can make creative use of type.
* to improve their visual language to a more sophisticated level and to develop their personal voice.
* to develop their ability to work with full range of various media (illustration, photography, collage, computer)
* to be able to present and discuss a design solution with a profound explanation concerning the governing design philosophy.

Prepare yourselves for the presentations. Each group should be doing it approximately 10 minutes. (Including existing examples from the brand campaign, examples from competitors and your creative idea and your work).
In addition to research, you should bring visuals, one item should be finished.

Also at the final day (May 22nd)every student should submit the whole year work in CD. Works should be written in pdf and JPEG formats.

PROJECT 1 - MATHEMATIC/POETIC

Subject: Designing a postcard. You are asked to question mathematical and poetic sides related with city.

Brief: Postcards should promote the idea of 'city'. Original drawings, photos, or prints are accepted. There are no restrictions on medium.

Format: 17x12 cm

In this project you are asked to build a visual message by using marks, images, photography, illustration and typography. As a designer your task is the creation of visual ideas.On the other hand, visual experience can be subjective and determined by the audience, intention of designer, culture, history, politics, tradition, syntax, habits, economy, aesthetical values, ethics, and technology.

In order to create intended message (in this case viswals related with the selected city) you should understand the anatomy of a visual message. In other words, you should understand the fundamentals of the city and your point about the city. There ara two factors incolved in this process which may be helpful to you to visualise your ideas: representation & abstraction

The visual experience is subjective. For example, to Leonardo Da Vinci a bird meant flight, because he was interested in flying machine. Detailed bird such as a dove may be perceived as love and peace for some others. In this casephotographyis the most technically dependable in means of representing reality. Highly realistic painting may come close.

The other way of creation of a visual message can be done by using abstraction which is distillation, reduction of multiple factors to only essential. When you are visualising your work, you should consider all aspects related with construction of a visual message.

PROJECT 5 - ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

Brief: In this project, we will work on an advertisement campaign in collaboration with GRA 344 Psychology of Advertisement course.

By using the results of the researchs that you have made in GRA 344, you will be designing an advertising campaign for the brand and its product which you have chosen among the given sectors in Turkey.

This project will be carried on as a group work and each group will be designing the following three media to promote their advertisement campaign:

Billboard: Billboard is considered to be in classical horizontal format which is 3.20x2.20 cm. Your work will be on 48x70 cm.

Magazine or newspaper ad: The magazine ad is considered to be one full (right) page, but you can use double spread, or more pages if it is necessary for your advertisement concept. For the newspaper ad you are required to use one full page in black and white.

TV Advertisement (storyboard): TV storyboards are 12 colored frames which depict key scenes of a TV commercial from the beginning to the end along with the corresponding script under each frame. For the project, you are required to design a TV commencial and present it in the form of a storyboard pasted on 35x50 cm format.

PROJECT 2 - KINETIC IDENTITY

Brief: In this project we will study an unconventional approach to corporate identity design. As an alternative method, kinetic identity aims to construct a visual identity with 'changeable elements' instead of repeating fixed units.

By using different techniques of kinetic identity, this project requires you to design a corporate identity, consisting of an emblem/logo and stationary set.

To answer this question, you will be using the list given in the class, after you pick a motto from the list you will decide what kind of a firm it can belong to. Feel free to use your imagination. Then, you are to find name to your imaginary firm and start working on its corporate identity.

PROJECT 2 - TYPOGRAPHIC SPACE

Brief : In this project we will focus on the typographic abstraction and representation of a 'living space.' The aim is to examine, analyse and represent the qualities of a specific SOCIAL SPACE through a typographic composition. By experimenting with new forms and relations in typography, you are expected to transform an experienced and shared space into visual form.

In this context, abstraction is an important key-word. Our project does not involve ''drawing by letters'; but arranging typographic forms in accordance with design principles so that the finished composition will create the 'feeling' of the selected social space. The project requires you to transform a social space into typographic abstraction. The function of the area, people's behavior, its sound, directions, movement, history, architectural structure, color, simply all features that create the atmosphere of your selected social space can be used as key-words for your departure.

In this project, you have to come up with your own materials. Instead using dummy text, please refer to your subject. You can use your notes, previously written material, comments dialogues, signs as your material. Be creative !!!

We will be doing collages next class in the studio, so please bring magazines, news papers, items which have relevance with your space. Come to class prepared and decide on your space.
